This brings back the old memories.I used to love the Whistlers pulling away from Darlington or Newcastle with a Liverpool service.Sometimes we would get away quick,but this rivals a Deltic with both her Napiers working right.People reckon the 40s were not up to going very fast.I can tell you that the way we flew through Northallerton and Thirsk we were going at a rate of Knots.I can recount every single sight which laid before our Eyes on the four track racing stretch.Tollerton was a blur.

I never really gave 40s their credit until last year. I used to prefer Deltics to them, and I booked on the Preston to Kings Cross tripper in November last year which 40145 replaced. I thought, well, may aswell give her a go and she absolutely took me by surprise. The speed we went from Kings Cross to Doncaster was amazing. Despite the 40 clocking up 800 miles in one day, it was the 47 on the rear that failed and it was only suplying the heat! Thanks!
