The Hired Hands Music CD Scottish Folk Songs "Over the years of playing and practicing together, we have had many requests for a CD of our music," said Allison Miller, "and so we have finally put together a recording of some of our favorite pieces!" Thus the creation of their first CD, "The Hired Hands: Something...", a CD of Scottish folk music on harp, with a sprinkling of other acoustic instruments.

The children of Tim and Ann Miller, who live on a farm near Lisbon and the Scenic Vista Park, are going far and wide to pursue their interest in Scottish and Irish folk songs led by two celtic harps played by their two eldest daughters, Allison and Sairey. Allison spent a year in Scotland pursuing post-graduate studies in traditional music and plays a Dusty Strings FH36 harp, also daubling in vocals and random "background stuff". Sairey has also studied harp both in America and overseas, is the winner of the 2008 National Scottish Harp Championship, and plays the Steen Edinburgh harp, piano and button accordions plus the pennywhistle.

The CD took 18 months to produce due to the artists attention to detail, but primarily because of a busy schedule of school and work, between practicing and arranging, recording sessions at Aardvark Productions in Steubenville, Ohio, and finishing touches with graphic designing. The girls are both in college in different states, one in graduate school for physical therapy, the other an undergraduate in the liberal arts. The oldest Miller girl have many people to thank for encouraging their musical interests and education...especially their family, Mrs. Mary Louis Foster who taught us piano for many, many years, our lovely and talented session musicians, all the people at the Design Studio and Aardvark Recording Studio. "...Plus all the incredible people at the Ohio Scottish Arts School and the Ohio Scottish Arts School, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and anyone who ever taught us a tune. Recording session musicians include Zachary Miller, who does a bodhran on Tracks 1, 5, 8 and 10; Laura Miller, fiddle on Tracks 10 and 11; Micah Miller, doing the concertina on Tracks 2 and 10; Andy Cowan, the mandolin on Track 5; Bob Trapp, guitar and bass on Tracks 1 and 5; Lou Contumelo, snares on Track 9, and James Graff, guitar on Track 5. Something includes Track 1, Oberlin Set; Track 2, Fareweel tae Tarwathie; Track 3, The Waves of Rush; Track 4, The Lost Sherpa; Track 5, Sean's Fish; Track 6, Aqua Vitae; Track 7, Wings of the Scorrie; Track 8, Something; Track 9, The Gifford Girl; Track 10. Ligonier; Track 11, The Land o' the Leal, and Track 12, The Minstrel Boy. The tracks are a mix of traditional Scottish and Irish dance tunes, original instrumental compositions, traditional Scottish songs, and two poems set to music. A keepsake-designed "Something" CD cover exemplifies the precise presentation and history-based folklore of The Hired Hands. • They are young, and in their early 20s, and full of energy, having been raised on a farm and home schooled. Also, the two sisters are self-taught, never having any formal instruction. Thanks for your interest. For more of their music, select various sea turtle 5-minute videos on YouTube under my handle, Coastal Digital

  • absolutely beautiful

  • Their CD is very special, too, including a poem, "Gifford Girl," they turned into music. This is a sad story and their music really tell the tale of this poor girl's suffering because of political differences.

  • Extremely talented family. Great sound affects.

  • Wonderful music. That family is truly talented in many ways.
