Community Board 7's Transportation Committee voted late last night in favor of moving forward on having protected bike lanes on Amsterdam and Columbus Avenue's tonight. The vote signified a big victory for the Upper West Side Livable Streets campaign and came about after much testimony by residents looking for safer streets for pedestrians and bikers.

This has been a 2 year battle - and tonight's vote was pivotal.

Committee members heard testimony from other Community Board reps where protected bike lanes have already been installed as well as from area kids who bike to school and want safer routes - as well as from older citizens who are having a hard time crossing the wide and busy Avenues as they are now configured.

The meeting was heated and long - but all sides of the issue were discussed.
