Ruins of Nineveh in Mosul

U.S. Soldiers, civilians, and United Nations representatives visit the Ruins of Nineveh in Mosul, Iraq, Nov. 22, 2008.

Nineveh is the fourth capital of the Assyrian Empire, built by King Sennacherib between 704 - 681 B.C. The site sits within the city of Mosul enclosed by a wall 12 km long and features the Gate of Nergal and a deteriorated palace.

Nice. The war, it appears, is almost won. Thanks to the Surge that was bitterly opposed by antiwar groups who craved failure and wanted a full blown civil war in Iraq. This has thankfully been averted.
