My grandmother used to have a black and white children's book about Little Black Sambo that she used to read to me all the time. I'm white. That book used to be my favourite because my favourite meal that gram used to cook for me were pancakes. She used to affectionately call me little black Sambo with absolute no hint of prejudice whatsoever.

I know of the Slang Terms SAMBO, they have nothing to do with the book, just as the Japanese word, Sambo has nothing to do with Black Children (or Indian for that matter).
Go to preschool, they have some nice maps and books with pictures from which you may be able to glean accurate information . As a projedct why don't you tell me what part of Africa Sambo's BENGAL (as in Bengali State, INDIA) can be found. Oh, Tigers are not indigenous to Africa? Interesting, NO?Oh, they come from S Asia. Hmm

So next time that you feel like saying something you know NOTHING about, there are probably a few web sites that might convince you. Try Google, Wikipedia, and look up Helen Bannerman. BTW, the reason that she stayed in India for so many years is that her husband was the top British Medical Officer in Madras for the British Colonial Government back in the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Go to preschool, that is where I read the book

i remember having this read to me at school in 1975 when i was 7. its amazing how some stories stick with you..i think it must have been the tigers turning into butter..i think if the book had been given a different name, maybe it would still be around today.

@ihopveggan - tell me something I don't know. I've lived with this crap for 57 yrs, and it's not getting better, only being better masked. just look at how now we have the most disrespected president in history, and I'm not talking about on "saturday night live" or some comedy skit. I'm talking prime time news. This country, though I love it, should be ashamed. Not racial? ...Please.

To really understand the negative impact of this book.......you have to be black. Sorry, just telling it like it is. Racism only going to hit home if you've experienced it, lived it, fought it, and have overcome it.

I had this book as a child and loved it BECAUSE Sambo out-smarted the tigers and ate them on his pancakes...I never read it as a racist story and was shocked when someone told it was.
Having said all that, I must admit that when I saw the 1935 cartoon.....I lmfao!!! Ha, Ha! "That 'ol Tiger sho' do like dark meat!!" Might be racist, but it's funny as hell! I laughed to hard to be offended XD!

As a very young boy, I attended a Catholic school where there had been only 2 black families in attendance, one being ours. One day we had story time, and the nun said, "Today we're going to read a story that should be very special to ....(me). It's the story of ' Litte Black Sambo!'" She looked at me with a sinister smile as the rest of the class laughed uncontrollably........ Nuns.
