i learnt how to play High E without the thumb hole, and High G covering half the thumb hole. Is that way wrong?

In the beginning it can be but once you got it under your fingers you can master most any high notes!

You *can* play high E without the thumb hole (in fact, I taught it that way to my general music class last year that way). It's actually slightly more in tune that way. But high F and high G need the hole to be half-covered, so it's easier to just play the E with the thumb hole half covered as well.
