(05/23/11) YONKERS - About 1,000 people came out tonight to Saunders High School in Yonkers to protest planned school cuts at the final public meeting of the City Council.
Under the plan, numerous teachers would be laid off, sports would be eliminated and pre-K would come to an end, among many other cuts.
Officials say that they must close a $42 million budget gap.
Parents and staff say that the state needs to provide more funding to the district.
Also proposed was a 4.8-percent property tax increase, but Superintendent Bernard Periozio says parents may be willing to pay even more to support the schools.
