The real killer of CAIL also took many other airlines down. It was the terrible decline in tourist travel after the Gulf War in 1992. Canadian Airlines Int'l was one of the very very best and cash constraints established from rapid growth (like Wardair) at that time just made it impossible to survive. When Wardair went down they were losing $0.5m a day. Had CAIL not acquired them it would have made little difference.

Retired plane, retired airline, retired airport

But it was those things that let to the company's downfall.

not quite, Canadian had a lot of bad cards given to them, got shitty routes compared to AC ect ect..... Also buying wardair was a terrible decision as well that cost them in the long run.
-
They both had support by the government it was bad decisions that led them to being bought by Air Canada. The government does not pick and chose company's. Canadian airlines made 3 billion dollars of revenue in 1999, one of there last years.

Well..... a corp called ONEX was going to buy both AC and CDN and merg them, alongside American Airlines as their partners, but the Canadian Government blocked that, saying there was to much american ownership, on the condition of AC buying canadian on its own. AC had more money due to the Canadian Gov. Giving them tons of money and perks due to them being a former crown corporation, unlike CP.
-
Then why where they bought by AC and not the other way around.
Canadian Airlines nolonger exists either.... A defunct Airport and a defunct airline....
