There's an observation point called Imperial Hill on the south side of Los Angeles international Airport where people gather almost every day to watch the big jets land and takeoff. They call themselves plane spotters and on any given day they'll spend hours observing, logging and taking photos of the jets not only at LAX, but at airports around the world.

Plane spotters have been observing aircraft since the 1920's. During World War Two, citizens in Britain were encouraged to become members of the Royal Observer Corps to help spot enemy aircraft in the skies over England.

Plane spotting became even more popular after the war and grew exponentially with the advent of the internet and the introduction of new digital cameras.
