  • I remain unconvinced that this is not the single greatest song ever written. It's so stark.

  • Nick Cave and Tom Waits are the most wonderful story tellers!!

  • I think the song's connotation is that he is the devil, teaching 'her' about the evils in the world so that she will see it in a different perspective. ie. crying.

  • Absolutely stunning.

  • This video has to have to most powerful imagery of any video I've seen.

  • @manarazer so?

I takes time for Tom, and a lot of heart experience... Tom has great voice and lyrics.

  • @twistedsister1975 Sorry to hate, but Tom Waits sounds like he has throat cancer.

  • If this were the only song he has ever written he would be as great as he is! This song is so complete..I listen to it over and over again and after all these years and I am marvelled every single time I hear it..even at the details such as the emphasis on the prepositions, the way the melody goes down on the word "earth" and up again, the semi-admittance in the phrase "while sorrows pile up around you ugly useless and overinflated", the difference that word "sadly" makes..beauty and greatness

  • This is my favorite song of all time! Such intensity and emotion! And his beautiful words . . .

  • Gives me chills. Great song and songwriter
