Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara. Guru Sakshath Parambrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha. (tr: Guru is the creator Brahma, Guru is the preserver Vishnu, Guru is the destroyer Siva. Guru is directly the supreme spirit — I offer my salutations to this Guru.)
Adi Shankara begins his Gurustotram or Verses to the Guru with the following Sanskrit Sloka, that has become a widely sung Bhajan. Source: Wikipedia, search for Guru

Well isn't that nice; another story from the shastras depicting open and uninhibited violence towards a woman! Hmmm...I think I recall a very poignant verse:
"Women must be honored and adorned by their fathers, brothers, husbands and brothers-in-law, who desire their own welfare. Where women are honored, there the Gods are pleased. But where they are not honored, no sacred rite yields rewards."

You are right that violence towards fellow humans is something that should be frowned upon and indeed there is never any excuse that can be used to validate violence. But I'd like to advise you to not take this depiction too literal: interpret it as an elaborate Punch and Judy show where the moral of the story is that good in the end shall triumph over evil (if necessary by force ;p)

i thought that shani dev and hanuman dev were kids when they had the fight. shani dev had left his palace in anger and surya dev asked hanuman to find shani. which he did and made him come back home!! then shani went into meditation and came years later to surya as a new dharmic person who was a big krishna bhagt and the story goes on....

Several variations exist
The stories and characters there in are only a means to an end. The end being to be able to convey a compelling and rivetting story which teaches us something valuable which we'll be able to use in our later life.
