My Uncle, Bobby George, was a great writer, as well as singer and played guitar; he also wrote , I never picked cotton. and many others. He passed away Aug 9th, 1973. he was with Bobby Austin and Wynn Stewart and his band when he had a stroke. you can hear him on youtube, Bobby George 1937-1973. Thanks for the nice comments, Vern Stovall was the first to record this song, and co-wrote it. .Sue

First version of this song I heard was the Elvis Presley version that was a bit more upbeat..Keith has a complete different tempo and style with his version..Great written song!

I agree with you Freba90, no matter where life takes us in this world the grave is at home and I'm sure Keith would have wanted to be there because he never forgot where he come from.
Kieth Whitley was great, I wish my Uncle, Bobby George, could have lived long enough to hear him sing this song. My Uncle wrote this song many years ago,
