I know this is really old, but humidity determines if you can build a static charge. Too high and no charge.

does this shock you if you touch it? bc for my physics project i need to make an static electricity zapper so it has to zapp my physics teacher and this is the only video i can find that is simple to make with static electricity

@cupatt Energy and Electricity are forms of radiation produced either by Dark matter reactions or by Light matter reactions. Dark Matter = Space, Light Matter = The Giant Sun at the center of our galaxy or sun in this solar system. All we are really doing is creating tools much like an antenna and tunning into the different radiations.

wat r the materials
Hello,
I am trying to find out how you did this. My son is trying to do the same experiment, but for some reason we aren't having any luck. What kind of cloth are you using? please tell me. We got to turn this in on Wednesday!

Hello, Sorry I was unable to reply by the time your project was due. I hope you figured it out. We found this project & committed to it & then realized we owned no wool. We could only find 20% wool cloth by the yard @ the fabric store. Best results were rubbing the wool on 1 side of the plexiglass to get it 'ready' & then facing that side toward the rice. Then we rubbed the wool on the top side as u c in the video. Experiment didn't work as easily as the instructions said. Let us know how u did.

did you try other materials and if so why do some materials hold the charge and others do not

The only other material we tried in place of the Rice Crispies was a handful of ABS plastic pellets. The ABS is highly charged at work in the sheets of plastic we make--shocks us often. The raw pellets did not work at all here like I hoped they would though.
