1915 on Christmas day
On the western front the guns all died away
And lying in the mud on bags of sand
We heard a German sing from no mans land
He had a tenor voice so pure and true
The words were strange but every note we knew
Soaring ore the living dead and dammed
The German sang of peace from no mans land

Oh silent night no cannons roar
A king is born of peace for evermore
Alls calm, alls bright all brothers hand in hand
In nineteen and fifteen in no mans land

They left there trenches and we left ours
Beneath tins hats the smiles bloomed like wild flowers
With photos, sigurates and boats of wine
We built a solders truce on the front line
There singer was a lad of twenty one
We begged another song before the dawn
And sitting in the mud and blood and fear
He sang again the song all longed to hear

Oh silent night no cannons roar
A king is born of peace for evermore
Alls calm, alls bright all brothers hand in hand
Midst gas and rusty wire in no mans land

And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain
And we killed them and they killed us again
With binit, bomb, bullet gas and flame
And neither we nor them atall to blame
There was heavy fighting rite throughout the day
For one night's peace we bloody did pay
At night they charged we fought them hand to hand
And I killed the boy that sang in no mans land

Oh silent night no cannons roar
A king is born of peace for evermore
Alls calm, alls bright all brothers hand in hand
And that young solder sings
and the sound of peace still rings
Tho the captains and the kings build no mans land

Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

  • War is fought by common man, but declared by cowards who sit comfortably in their offices, homes & congresses. We are all brothers, yet against each other we pick up the standard to the death. There is no glory in battles, only the cries of pain, lost loves, mothers. Send the deputies, the congresses, the presidents, the leaders to war. It is their war, they so declared; let us stay home. Silent night it would be, if we just didn't go, for surely the pontificators dare not venture to.

  • My Grandfather was wearing a gas mask while on buriel detail. When he turned over 1 body his cousin was staring into his face.He was so overcome he took his gas mask off.He was exposed to the gas long enough that it killed him 7 years later. But not before he had 3 children. One of them my mother.

This government never ceases to go to war.The troops have to say No and disobey this President. It's not the troops fault. It's the people who send them off to war.

    Ron Paul in 2012..

  • My Grand dad was there on that day, he did not want to be there, but he had to be there,

Fighting in a war that he and his comrades did not understand, many of his friends died in that terrible battle, but those who started it were still alive the next day, I can say no more. except ,God bless them.

  • It is only time that tells us we were wrong to go to war or we were wrong to bail out the banks. If only for once we got it right there would be no need to hear such poignant songs as this. The song is beautiful and it is right we should always remember those who suffered because we got it wrong.

  • just amazing and agree the year is trivial what a dick head get a life

  • Looks like we'll be back fighting the Krauts again to get back our countries...

  • @ARDEN007 Ugh.

  • Brilliant, makes you soul search, my favourite recording

  • There was at least one small truce in 1915 when the church bells tolled in a French village. The German soldier who began the Youth Hostels after the war described it. This is described in my little book Oh Holy Night: The Peace of 1914, which includes several letters written by these soldiers, describing the truce....see amazon for reviews or my website link on my channel here.

  • It is so beautiful, I can't believe this is true. One of my favorite parts of history lessons, finally something good to say about humanity. Finally.
