you're right that it equals 0 or 0x. here's another way to see where the 6 comes from: 6x+6=6x+48; subtract 6x from both sides, 0x+6=0x+48; this is the same as 6=48. so the remaining 6 is there because no number was added or subtracted to both sides. an x term was subtracted from both sides, so only the x terms were affected.
