Atlas 10" metal lathe

I just bought this Atlas 10" TH42 lathe. It had so much old oil or grease crud that you could hardly move the carriage.. I took it apart, cleaned it and oiled it up and now all the parts move freely. I dont know anything about lathes ...yet! I'll probably use this more for wood. It also came with some tools, gears and the original manual.I also just greased the gears and now it is way more quieter than in the video.... I see yours is as noisy as my 1938 12"! Those straight cut gears sure make a racket!

Mine has loose change gears and no power cross feed like yours, but works well for what it is. Definitely NOT a heavy duty, high precision machine - but can yield good results with some finesse.

I'm thinking of selling and upgrading though...

@Ziknazoo I think most of my noise came from me cleaning too much gunk off the gears. I added some light grease to the gears and it sounded much better. I couldnt do precision work if I tried, I have no clue what I'm doing . I'm basically going to use it for wood turning and the occasional piece of metal. I may sell mine too.

Great lathe, but can become very expensive with the extra tooling. Milling machine might be just as useful, maybe more.
