Linear amplifier repair

TX 2250 Linear amplifier. Possibly made by Palomar. This amp appears to have a bad relay as it stays engaged in TX mode.

2 items to help with getting solder off a board is fresh solder (add a little, it adds flux) or a flux pen. Adding flux (with the pen or a little extra solder, makes the solder flow more easily, and it will wick quicker into the braid :)

@dash8brj Thanks for the tip. I recently acquired a solder sucker that works much better. It is a brand name solder sucker. The old solder sucker would not lock well and when it was released it had poor suction. the one I have now is 100% better. I will try what you've said and I am confident this will help the solder removal process...!

@Tobinindustrial No worries! - I've also got a cheap solder sucker, but I also now have a desoldering iron, which is similar to a soldering iron with a hollow tip, and a suction pump at the other end of the cable. Desoldering is VERY easy with it :)

@dash8brj Never heard of that kind of desoldering tool but I'd imagine having a suction pump makes it a lot easier than having to melt solder, placement of solder sucker and depression of button, etc..... I am still novice and don't get to work too much on electronics. I try and repair what breaks down but I know my limits... But folks like you are making the learning curve much shorter thank you very much!!! : > )

Nice video my friend... Regarding using braid as a solder sucker, make sure that you heat up the braid as well as the solder blob. The braid needs to be good and hot to draw the solder. Also make sure the braid/wick isn't too thick that it won't get to temperature. Nice vid mate!

@MrSuperheterodyne OK, Thanks for that extra info. That was not what I was doin' mate... The braid was pretty thick and would be difficult to heat up. I will look into finding smaller braids and to a test on an old circuit board.

I have a solder sucker but it don't lock right and is cumbersome to use. Argh!
