OK, I don't believe this is a cottonmouth water moccasin but I am not an expert. It may be some kind of blotched water snake. It was not aggressive. When I moved closer it was quick to hide in the rocks. I didn't have an easy retreat so I tried not to aggravate it.

  • That is a member of the Genus Nerodia. It is not venomous. And by the way cotton mouth and water moccasin are the same snake, their scientific name is Agkistrodon piscivorous. You can take my word on it I am a herpetologist.
