From 1968-1969, a select group of aviators strapped into the cockpits of their two-seat, propeller-driven airplanes and went to war in Vietnam. As forward observers, they flew hundreds of feet above one of the deadliest battlefields in modern history, all in an airplane no larger than a small pickup truck. In the process, they saved the lives of thousands of American servicemen.
Now, their story is told in "A Hundred Feet Over Hell: Flying With the Men of the 220th Recon Airplane Company Over I Corps and the DMZ, 1968-1969" by Jim Hooper.
A great book. I couldn't put it down. Of course it was especially relevant since I was a crew chief for those planes that year. An experience I will never forget. The book fills in the other side of the story for me since I was just doing my thing on the ground, they were taking all the heat. All in all the experience of being there was life changing for this 20 year old kid from La Habra California.
