Q) The Distant Peaks (Sam Goldwater)

A 'taster' made as part of the Shorted Film Challenge, and one of three winners receiving development and NFM funding to produce their short this summer (2011).

The Distant Peaks is the story of Gladys, a young lecturer diagnosed with a terminal illness, and her unlikely relationship with a wayward student and lonely drug dealer, D.

After a chance encounter, D tells Gladys of his plan to escape from 'all this' and invites Gladys to join him in a quest to climb the highest of the 'distant peaks'. The mountain range is presumed to be 'fictional' by everyone in the town, only D knows they are real.

In the simple beauty of the wild Gladys finds happiness with D, away from the pressures of doctor's appointments and her thesis deadlines. When she stumbles upon the truth of the distant peaks she realises the destination was never important anyway. Out of medication and food, she wants nothing more than to carry on, together, regardless.
