2/27/11, 6:03pm: All that's left of the famous Galveston Flagship Hotel is the concrete and steel frame as it is being taken down to make way for a new amusement park and entertainment pier. Hopes were to restore the structure, but Hurricane Ike put an end to those plans. It was built in 1965 to show Galveston had bounced back from Hurricane Carla a few years earlier, and it was billed as the only hotel built over the water along the Gulf coast. It will be very odd to be driving along the seawall in the very near future and not see The Flagship Hotel, but the Pleasure Pier will be proof the great city of Galveston has yet again bounced back from a terrible storm. God bless Galveston!
The Flagship is the only hotel built out over the water on the entire US coast not just the gulf.
