Video for 'Mr Clive' by Greg Fleming & The Trains.
From the 1993 album Ghosts Are White released on Kane Massey's Lost Records. Greg Fleming is a singer/songwriter based in Auckland, New Zealand. Band in the video is the Trains line-up from around 1991-92: Greg Fleming (guitar and lead vocals) Mark Peterson (electric guitar and BVs) Nick Kreisler (bass) Stuart Broughton (drums). The band in the video also features Meryl Main on violin and tambourine (who also played on the track).
According to Nick Kreisler, Trains' bass player at the time "I had conceived the clip while I was recovering from a hard night, sitting on the couch in my back yard. I storyboarded it. The character of the song bore some resemblance to Rudolf Erb, a German photographer I worked for who played the part of Mr Clive in the video. Rudolf was keen, and I approached Simon Raby to shoot it. I had met Simon when he was shooting a film that I worked on, Sinistre, by an art school student called Niki Caro."
Filmed in 1992, mostly at Drake Street, Freemans Bay, Auckland City, and at Meryl Mains' flat.
The director (name unknown - Wayne?) also appears as the bouncer on the left who kicks 'Clive' out on the street. The video was totally funded by the director who wanted it as a part of his show reel and pulled in many favours - lighting trucks, camera operators. He went on to direct some episodes of NZ TV soap Shortland Street.
Additional actors include Susannah Devereaux (now an actress in the USA and who has also appeared in one of Ted Brown's videos) as the girl of 'Clive's dreams; Stacy Gregg - fashionista and children's book writer as the bartender and poet Anna Jackson as the girl who pushes 'Clive away on the dancefloor.
