Former University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) Assistant to the Director for Special Programs and Curatorial Assistant Melissa Hueting talks about Robert Motherwell's "Elegy to the Spanish Republic, No. 126", a UIMA work currently on display at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport through Dec. 31, 2009 as part of the exhibition "A Legacy for Iowa: Pollock's 'Mural' and Modern Masterworks from the University of Iowa Museum of Art." I once read that Motherwell's elegies depict a schematic interpretation of when a bull is slain by a matador, they are castrated and their genitals are strung up on a wire fence. I don't know if this is actually what Motherwell had in mind, but I think its probably one of the most excellent metaphors for doom and tragedy I've ever heard of.
