Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.

Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

  • It's called "Here's a first rate opportunity." Not "It"

  • Well done. Checked it out and you are correct.

  • Men, Ladies, What are the odds?

  • No kidding, the big scandal in HMS Pinafore is when one of the characters says the word "damn." Societal mores have certainly changed since then.

  • @Afalstein Agreed. If you listen closely this is really quite a "colorful" song as far as what they are really saying.

  • OMG were doin this for our school play and i think i would die if i saw us doing this song in that kind of......manner :S

  • @Wribbet I think the actual joke here is that the more obvious offense is unsaid. Why are they kidnapping the girls? To get married, of course! This is a play!

It's partly tongue-in-cheek. It's actually making fun of the same societal mores it's abiding by.

  • I went to see this performed by a local Amateur Operatic company on Saturday night - the whole performance was excellent, but this bit was the best - the way the girls reacted when the pirates rushed on stage was priceless!

  • Any idea where I can find dresses like that? My school is putting Pirates of Penzance on.

  • No problem! :)

  • It's funny that in 1880 their idea of the most scandalous offense was pirates marrying young girls against their wills.
