Laura Nyro (October 18, 1947 -- April 8, 1997) was an American composer, lyricist, singer, and pianist. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock and soul.

She was best known, and enjoyed her greatest commercial success, as a composer and lyricist rather than as a performer. Between 1968 and 1970 a number of other singers had significant hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Save The Country" and "Black Patch"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul & Mary with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night with "Eli's Coming"; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)". Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof."

Lyrics:

Loving you so
I was too blind to see you
letting me go
But now that you've set me free
It's gonna take a miracle
Yes, it's gonna take a miracle
To make me love someone new
Cause I'm crazy for you

Oh oh, didn't you know
It wouldn't be so easy
lettin' you go
I could have told you
that it's gonna take a miracle
oh-uh Yes, it's gonna take a miracle
To make me love someone new
Cause I'm crazy for you

Oh, tho' I know I can't forget? about you
or come so? will show you how much
You're turning me around, destroying me
I'll never be the same anymore

You must realize
You took your love and left me
Quite by surprise
You can be sure that now it's gonna take a miracle
Yes, it's gonna take a miracle
To make me love someone new
Cause I'm crazy for you

  • Wow, such a Honie. I keep on discovering the music of fabulous musicians AFTER they've passed away. Somewhat sad about this. Beautiful songs from an incredible talent.

    RIP Laura Nyro.

  • And when they did Dancin' in the Streets and got to the line "can't forget the Motor City", repeating it over and over... well it brought the house to it's feet, cheering and rockin' Motown to bone. God cradle our angel in your arms. We will always love her.

  • @liza7320 Well deserved. Love Laura, wish she was still among us on earth!

  • @liza7320 I am SO happy to hear that! She is well deserving of this honor. It's a shame she isn't here to accept in person. I love her music.

  • Laura will be the only female inducted in the Rock and Roll hall and fame and Museum in April 2012. a well deserved honor!

  • @MsTexas73 Written by Bob Weinstein, Lou Stallman and Teddy Randazzo

  • While she's best known for cover versions of her songs I prefer her own performances - and her coolest stuff wasn't covered, since it was too long for am format, and very personal. Always love Laura!

  • I 1st heard this song on the movie "A Home At The End of the World", and fell in love instantly. Thank God I discovered this beautiful woman's music. Rest in peace, Ms. Nyro.

  • I can hear the miracles and Todd Rundgren she was something ! thanks for the post!

  • "God cradle our angel in your arms."
