It was wheat gluten and it was due to melamine in the wheat gluten. The wheat gluten was imported from China and it was "food grade" wheat gluten meaning that it was also going into human food in North American where we import most of our wheat gluten.
Melamine was also found in rice gluten, soy protein, milk proteins such as dried milk, casein (in many cookies and chocolate candies), milk protein, etc.

my friend lauren has 4 dogs and 2 cats (it's like a zoo at her house!!! anyways,) she feeds them Pedigree every single day! One of her dogs, a black labradour, will soon die of cancer, a beautiful 6 year old lab.

I HEARD ABOUT THIS A MONTH AGO BECUZ MY DOG (german shepherd his name is poncho) started losing hair on his back and his doctor told us to change his dog food. we did that and found out 6 months ltr that commercail dog food contains dogs and cats in it. when making the food they dont take off the plastic bags, id tags, and collars. now Poncho eats rice, beef, and steak. becuz dogs in usa are suposed to live to the age of 27, my other german shepherd Ferro, died at 11 of cancer.

I know, me too! I'm thinking about switching them to organic food too. I'm really scared. I would die if something happened to my cats! My loves!

Turns out it was actually rat poison. The grain source comes from China where they still use ratpoison on their grains.

I was 500 miles away.. my dog was being babysat by our son. We use one of the brands but dry dog food HOWEVER we use a special kind of can food to mix with her dry food so we were stressing. By luck of the draw.. our canned food wasn't in the recall.
