On March 31, 2008, Governor Patrick joined Lieutenant Governor Murray, Senate President Murray, Speaker DiMasi, Attorney General Coakley, other state and local officials and dozens of area teenagers to kick off Youth Violence Prevention Week at the State House. The governor highlighted some of his administration's initiatives and accomplishments in preventing youth violence, including summer jobs opportunities, after-school programs, and anti-gang and peer counseling services. "Violence will not define our communities, or our Commonwealth, or our young people," said Governor Patrick. "This is our responsibility."
