Barton Garnet Mine was active until the 1980's, when they struck water and the open pit mine began to fill with water. Rather than try to keep the water pumped out, they let the pits fill and opened the mines to rockhounds, who can pick up garnets by the handful for an entry fee and a per-pound price for the rocks hauled out. The ground is literally covered with garnets, a few of which each year are even good enough to be considered gem quality. The mine is located in the community of North River in Adirondack Park in upstate New York. To read more about my round-the-world travels, visit my blog, http://holeinthedonut.com.
