Gahirmatha is the only marine wildlife sanctuary of Orissa. Olive Ridley sea turtles migrate in huge numbers from the beginning of November, every year, for mating and nesting along the coast of Orissa.
Gahirmatha is considered one of world's largest nesting sites with around 700,000-800,000 turtles laying eggs on the beach every year.
Unlike last year, when the turtles were conspicuously absent, year 2009 saw thousands of Olive Ridley Turtles making their annual journey to the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary. The mass nesting at Gahirmatha started on March 21 and continued till March 24. In these four days, around 1.7 lakh turtles had nested at the site.
Contrary to the Greenpeace Tata controversy, dredging activities in the nearby Dhamra port, has not affected the nesting & hatching of olive ridley turtles in any ways.
