ZHANG:
A new report released by UNICEF highlights the risks for pregnant women and newborn babies in developing countries like India. UNICEF is launching a new campaign in India to help combat the issue.
STORY:
The report says that 78, 000 women die from pregnancy and childbirth each year in India. In addition, about one million neonatal deaths occur annually.
The scenario prevails in all the developing countries.
[Karin Holshof, UNICEF Representative]:
"The divide between the developing countries and industrialized countries is perhaps greater on maternal mortality than on almost any other issue. The average lifetime risk of a women in a least developed country dying from complications related to pregnancy and child birth is more than 300 times than for a woman living in industrialized nations."
Bollywood actress Raveena Tondon is launching a new campaign to reach out to villages to educate the women and their male partners.
[Raveena Tondon, Film Actress]:
"I have done a partnership with UNICEF, we will be going from one village to another to create awareness. I think the masses must identify a film actress because they have seen me as a mother, I want to, through my personal life, tell men the importance of their wives, daughters and daughters-in-law when they are mothers."
The report stresses the need for emphasis on education as the most important measure for dealing with the issue.
