i find it a bit heartbreaking and interesting that even in the opening of the film, the introduction to the character you get the sense that there is a hole in Carl's life. He sleeps on one side of the bed, sits at one side of the table and it's obvious someone once slept and sat on the other--it's shown that his wife's passing affected him deeply even before you were told their story or that he even had a wife
