Beautiful bel canto aria, cavatina and its cabaletta, entrance scene of Beatrice in "Beatrice di Tenda" by Bellini. Joan's legatto is absolutely flawless in the phrase involving a trill on G# and up to high Db down to B an octave below, and then trill on G and up to high B and then down to G# an octave below, and then trill on F# and then back up to G# and then back to B in the middle register! Absolutely fabulous and beautiful. The cabaletta is ended with a wonderful interpolated high E!

  • Her trilling is so precise. She makes everything sound so easy.

The old bel canto masters in the early 19th century would say the greatest art in singing is when a singer takes something of extreme difficulty, masters it, and then presents it to the public with the illusion that it's not more difficult than drinking a glass of water.

  • Come sempre, di una bravura trascendentale! E non parlo solo della solita perfezione vocale, ma anche dello splendido fraseggio!

Yes, the vocal line Bellini wrote is extremely difficult, specially difficult to sing it as if it's easy and sing it beautifully. He wrote this role for the same diva that originated La Sonnambula, Norma and Anna Bolena, one hell of a singer...and so was Joan Sutherland as well.

  • Good night Dame Joan !

  • One of the greatest singers of our time. Amazing.

  • Anche se in tutta la sua carriera avesse cantato solamente questo ruolo, e per una volta soltanto, Dame Joan dovrebbe comunque essere considerata la più grande cantante di tutti i tempi! Grazie, Primohomme!
