I was stationed near there once for the Air Force and remember being told that. I also have a picture of the statue from the mid 80"s before the city cleaned it up.
Anyone else remember the god-awful live action Popeye the Sailor movie from the 80's staring Robin Williams as Popeye? No wonder he refuses to acknowledge it. 5 *'s for bring back so old memories.
