The local PCA club (Porsche Club of America) put on an autocross in Pomona. I though this would be the perfect opportunity to bring my 1991 GTI 16v out to an autocross for the first time. I came in 13th out of 85 cars (this is a Porsche event, mind you!) with my early nineties 2 liter four cylinder FWD hatchback beating cars with over 400 hp in the process.

Tires/Wheels/Brakes: 15x7 ET28 Volk RE30s shod with 205/50/15 Toyo R888 tires. Wilwood powerlite front brakes (10.1") and MK4 GTI rear brakes (8.9"). Wilwood semi-track compound pads. Stainless lines, 22mm master cylinder and Motul RBF600 fluid.

Suspension: Bilstein PSS9, GC camber plates, R32 control arm bushings, Neuspeed sway bars 22mm front, 28mm rear. Camber: 2 degrees negative Toe: 1/16" toe out. Eurosport front and rear strut tower braces.

Engine/Transmission: Ported and polished stage 3 cylinder head by SCCH with Supertech oversized valves, titanium valve spring retainers, heavy duty valve springs, lighweight lifters, and tapered valve guides. 11:1 compression, Techtonics 268/276 cams, Autotech adjustable cam gear and IMS pulley. Lighened and balanced IMS. Techtonics Motronic chip, Eurosport airbox, ported and gasket matched Euro 50mm intake manifold. Techtonics 4-1 exhaust header ceramic coated with Techtonics 2.25" catless and stainless exhaust (with Borla muffler). 9lb Eurospec flywheel, Sachs Sport clutch and pressure plate, Autotech Wavetrac differential, USRT shift linkage, Techtonics HD motor mounts and Trans mount.

Cooling: Redline Water Wetter, Schrick finned and baffled aluminum oil pan, Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate with Setrab oil cooler, late passat 16v dual fan shroud, North Viking brake cooling ducts.

Battery: Voltphreaks VPH750 lithium ion battery (5.25 lbs vs 45 lbs. for the stock battery)

  • Mind you 150whp is actually around 175 crank (advertised) horsepower. The 2 liter normally puts out 134 crank horspower from the factory.

  • The engine modifications are listed in the video details. Mainly aggressive headwork, larger valves, cams, lightened rotational mass, 4-1 race header, full exhaust, 50mm euro intake manifold, intake and ECU chip.

  • Thanks! It last put down 150hp to the wheels, but it feels like much more than that :)

  • Got a 92 16v with Neuspeed sways and KW coils. Love it.

  • I miss my '91 GTI 8V.

  • Had the car with this engine setup on the dyno yet? Sounds great. I've seen some pics of your car on vwvortex, shes a beauty.
