So, while searching through the Ubuntu repositories, I came across this little gem.
It's a fairly simple game, you simply shoot at the viruses, either by clicking the button for a quick zap, or holding down the button and mowing through a whole group of the little buggers. However, as the levels progress, more and more of them run out from Microsoft applications, such as Internet Explorer and Outlook, and it becomes harder and harder to kill them without them reaching your precious files.
I say "your" precious files, because they are your files. The game takes four folders that you have somewhere on your computer, and makes the folders and their files game pieces that you have to protect. Now, just to let you know, this does not actually affect those chosen folders.
It's a game.
If you would like this game, and run Ubuntu, simply open up the Add/Remove Applications program, and do a quick search for "Virus Killer". It should be the only thing that comes up.
If you run any other version of Linux, or you'd like to compile it yourself, the developer has the source tarball and a .RPM file available for download:

Also, sorry for the spotty framerate in places. Currently my only working computer is this old Acer Aspire 3000 notebook, and while it runs Ubuntu great, it really lacks in the video area. If you can't otherwise notice, I was getting pretty bad framerates, and it really threw off my aim. Which doesn't help, seeing as I'm already pretty bad at this game.

  • i bet you could make something a bit like this on game maker.

  • @gmodfan11

You could probably make something a lot better than this on Game Maker ;)

Just have enemies float towards points, when you click it drains power but fires an entity, and when the entity hits the enemies they disappear/lose health. Points can be hit a certain amount of times before they fall, once they're all gone game over.

  • @rfryworld and you could make different virus types like "Joke" "Infector" "Deletor" and "Overwriter"

  • @gmodfan11

Yup, have some explode into a pixellated dust that makes it hard to see other viruses around it, have some be invisible for 25% or 50% of the time, have others have shields that can take more damage, add powerups like an attack that just clears out the board.. There's a lot you can do with it.

  • I'm not surprised, but that's just because of the fact that Youtube and stupidity tend to go hand in hand.

He's also obviously not a Linux user.

  • lol wow now I have heard it all XD
