On the subject of fasteners, the rule is they need to be tight enough to do their job, no more. Overtightening pulls threads, crushes things, and can lead to sudden failures. I use Blue Loctite on things so they don't work themselves loose. Absolute reliability is a must.
Automoblie technicians have a stethoscope with a probe that is perfect for finding the exact location of creaks. Have an assistant step on the pedal and flex the bike while you listen with the stethoscope. It's amazing how sensitive they are. You can even listen to the bearings in the hubs and bottom bracket.
Hi. I have a Specialized bike with a squeaking suspension. I live in a country where there are no bike mechanics so I have to fix it myself. I tried lubing all the moving joints, but I cannot get rid of the noise. The noise comes when I pedal, but not when I push down on the suspension. Yet, when I lock the suspension, the noise goes away. I concluded that it was the side to side twisting that causes it.
I'm pretty sure that the bottom bracket is not the culprit.
I also found that my cages when they work loose tend to creak. They couldn't find it when I took it to my mechanic. After about the second time I found it and tightened them and it was gone.
@Gibson2471 If its not carbon fiber composite just remove the handlebars and grease the bars where they meet the stem and where the stem meets the frame.

thanks for the tip. i think most of my creaking on the bikes have been to over tightening things on it. i tend to do that. i think it's from stress.

Meh. I've been chasing a creak on my bike for over a week. Still haven't figured it out.
