Playing Chicken with Buffalo in Oklahoma

I make a pilgrimage each July to the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma. It was, and still is, a sacred place to many of the Southern Plains Indian tribes in the state.

Herds of elk, longhorn cattle, and buffalo roam freely on the Refuge. Not freely within fenced-in pastures. I mean freely, freely. Up and down the roads and in the parking lots, if they choose. It's not uncommon while driving to yield to massive beasts clacking on the asphalt. En route to a trail head, I wheeled around a curve and halted quickly, because I met about 25 head of buffalo who had staked their claim on the road.

I began filming from the car, and everything was cool until one of the bulls started staring and snorting.
