My 04 does that, never could figure out what it was, sounded like a turbo whistle LOL, one mechanic told me he thought it could have been a small leak in the manifold that would go away when it got warm, just dont want it wo be something that I have to throw a pile of money at
-
My 04' 5.4 did it whenever it was below about 10. I live in Northern VT, and sometimes maybe once a year it will dip down to about -45 at night, it will start that cold, but its ear deafening the sound.

I have an 08 with the 4.6 It whistles a little bit when its cold, but not that loud. Lasts about 2 min roughly
-
My 04 does that when it gets below zero out as well. Most vehicles make strange noises when it's that cold though, so I've never looked into it or thought it to be a problem.

haha i think thats ice on your serpentine belt. Thats what happen with my truck
-
Yea I have the same truck and from I've been told it's air passing over the alternator that makes the whistle

@DarrenWS6 ive worked on both the only major difference is the heads obviously, the pcm is a little different and they have an electric rheostat throttle controls instead of the mechanical cable ones theres a few other very minor differences but i cant remember anymore of em lol, the belt and pullys are the same on these trucks, must have just been a bad set of bearings or something in 2004 idk
Holy crap thats LOUD! My 02 Sierra knocks a little if i gas on it before it's warmed up, but honestly ive never heard a truck whistle before.

@02LM7 Yeah it is, alternator bearings and cold, didn't get along. It hasn't done it since 2009. Past couple winters have been fine, even on the -17 day we had in January 2011.

@sstroh08 There are alot of engine differences between the 2v 5.4L and 3v 5.4L, '04+ 3v 5.4Ls have been the majority of whistle reports due to tensioner pullies.

I don't know if you still have this problem? I had the exact same thing as you (check my video) It was my alternator which needed to be changed and the whistle sound never came back. I live in Canada and get around -30 at some points in the winter. It was embarrassing starting it up!!

@bonesofsteel Thats cool. Funny thing is after taking this video it never did it again. Past two winters has been fine. it must have been ice in a pulley somewhere.
