I always thought this was a love song but with a kind of black humor regarding traditional gender roles and domestic partnerships. The speaker is saying "I love you so much I would even accept the historical norms of what a loving relationship should be, even though they are at their core terrible, oppressive and even abusive." Of course, the lover would never expect (or even accept) this from the speaker, hence the joke.
