@Swecan76 - I appreciate your point but it fails to recognize the fierce sense of national outrage and defiance that also lay behind the Soviet advance on Berlin. Germany attacked the USSR with a viciousness not experienced by, for example, the British. The ire of the Soviet army extended therefore beyond mere conscripted obedience. Indeed, how could you explain the ferocity of how the Soviets fought as merely fear (conscripted armies never make the same effort - just ask the Yanks in Vietnam).

@tempelton The Russians had no choice, if they retreated they were shot by their own people.
So I don't know about courage on the Russians part, more of choosing a lesser evil, try and fight and maybe live against the attackers or a sure death from your own shooting you as you turn around.
All the allies were brave though cause most volunteered.
