Technically, Lake Superior is an inland fresh water sea. It is named Superior because it has the highest elevation of the Great Lakes. The Ojibwe call the lake Gichigami, meaning "big water."

@mvallin, I found that black & white video of the big waves coming onshore in Superior: Search for ' Lake Superior Waves', & the poster is jdhaly24.
At about 50-sec. the view of the wave starts & pans right where it is a good 20-ft. tall.
