Personally, I think Sonic began going downhill after Sonic Heroes.

I personally enjoyed Shadow the Hedgehog, but I'm aware many see it as a failure.

It hit rock bottom at Sonic 06, and began slowly going up until the Surprising success that was Sonic Colors, where it reached a level not seen since SA2. And it's all uphill from there with how they're carrying the characters now.
