I am a 2nd-generation Russian-Ukrainian, born in Texas, and feel my Slavic roots every day. Perhaps some day I can locate the village of my Ukrainian grandmother

Could someone help me. As far as I know, there was a city called both Stalingrad and Leningrad. (not at the same time). and now it's called Volgograd? And is St. Petersburg the same city? I want to go to russia, and I can't find anything that makes sense on google, so please explain. :)

It's simple... St Petersburg became Petrograd in 1914, Leningrad in 1924, and back to St Petersburg in 1991.
The old city of Tsaritsyn became Stalingrad in the 20s and was renamed Volgograd in the 50s, when Stalin fell out of favour.
Two different cities with radically different histories. St Petersburg is on the Baltic, and the old imperial capital, whilst Volgograd is an industrial town on the Volga in Central Russia.
Clear it up, one hopes?
