Vesselina Kasarova (mezzo-soprano) sings Orphee's Act I ending bravura aria with the Viardot cadenza from Berlioz's French version of the Gluck opera, Orphee et Eurydice (Orfeo ed Euridice). From her 2005 concert with David Syrus & The SWR Sinfonieorchester Kaiserslautern at the Schwetzingen Festival.

If this stirs you, look for the RCA Red Seal CD 'The Magic of Kasarova' or the Studio Farao DVD of the opera conducted by Ivor Bolton for a commercially available rendition of it by Kasarova!

  • I thought this was absolutely horrible! And her smug expression, as if she sounds good, rather than like a monster! Do please listen to Anne-Sophie Von Otter's beautiful version, by far the most dramatic and melodic I've heard. But, oh! to hear it sung by a man.........Michael Maniaci, perhaps, or Max Emanuel Cencic, or (now I'm dreaming) Philippe Jaroussky.

  • @broschette I actually have seen and heard all the other performances you mentioned and still love this one.

    Which doesn't really say anything, of course. My taste and preference doesn't trump anyone and I wouldn't dream of denigrating any singer's performances that I dislike in order to try to sell the ones that I do. If only some fans of other singers would stop and think about how much ill will they generate for their idols with this sort of comments, perhaps they'll also learn to refrain.

  • That'll depend a lot on what you're referring to as her vocal crisis, I'm afraid. I have just listened to an air-check of her concert from last week and she sounds like her usual self. If you're referring to her use of chest notes and register breaks, I guess that isn't going away since it seems she uses those by choice. :o)

  • @broschette I sort of think that is her fioratura technique ie: the sneer... still a beautiful voice, but I don't like the heavy chesty sounds at times

  • I love what she can do with interpretation, but I'd give my kingdom for an actual "ah" vowel. It's often times like listening to a mezzo/contralto version of Joan Sutherland -- not in any good way either.

  • Well, that is quite clearly the doing of her over "darkening" of the voice by using basal tongue-root pressure. It was the same thing that killed Callas's voice (callous's voice -- no pun intended). That rough sound near the passaggio is one of the big warning signs of vocal nodules and over-covering and pushing, we both know, are some of the leading causes of such.

  • I respect Kasarova for her strong personality and her artistry, even if sometimes she exagerates to the point of mannerism, she is certainly one of the most important mezzos of this time, but... the best? by what standards? how is art measurable? maybe she's your favourite, and that's fine, but there are a few other mezzos out there who are definitely at least as good, even if less known... to you.
