Downing Street has said it is "appalled" at the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip
As the death toll rose above 325 and Israel promised a "war to the bitter end", Number 10 stepped up demands for a halt to the violence.
United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon condemned Israel's actions as "excessive" and demanded an immediate ceasefire.
BUT THE US STOPPED SHORT OF CALLING FOR AN END TO THE STRIKES AGAINST HAMAS-CONTROLLED GAZA.
Thousands of Israeli troops backed by columns of tanks and helicopter gunships launched a ground offensive in Gaza on Saturday night after a heavy artillery bombardment along the Gazan border. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has urged Israel to halt its ground offensive against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. On the other hand President Bush appears to have given Israel a free rein to invade Gaza - by pinning the blame for the war squarely on Hamas.
