Grid Runner was also released for the PC and Sony Playstation. If you've ever seen it for sale and dismissed it as a generic title not worth the time, well, we couldn't blame you. However, beyond the not entirely enticing packaging and perhaps uninteresting screenshots lies a game that's actually pretty fun and, albeit somewhat simple, is one of the better offerings on the Sega Saturn, especially if you're into competitive titles such as this. If it had a level editor where you could make custom rules or choose from a large list of rules, it'd be really neat.

The game is basically both "Tag" and "Capture the Flag" on steroids. You run across over fifty stages designed as a grid while trying to get more flags than your opponent, but it's not as simple as merely knowing where to get the flags. In this game, you can "Tag" an opponent and prevent them from grabbing flags, shoot them, use spells to do things such as speed up or slow an opponent down, and create your own little pathways to flags with magic tiles. The tiles take a little time to place down, so you want to make sure the coast is clear and not waste too much time, as this gives an opponent more time to beat you. The game has decent audio, though I must say that the visuals are surprisingly more crisp than I remember (this game has been collecting dust for years) and feature neat, quick little animations of each opponent you face. The opening movie is incredibly cheesy early 3D fare, but somewhat nostalgic too.

This video goes through a few levels. Enjoy.

  • Man, what have I been missing! I love the arcade style games, and this goes perfectly with it. You've got to love the old graphics cut scenes too.

  • Paid a whopping $1.99 for this today. Good deal.

  • This was supposed to be released for the SNES as Eurit but they didn't find anyone to publish.

Oddly, EA bought a proto cartdrige after some time.

  • Krosh looks like Airman with mace hands.

  • Dude! THIS takes me back!

  • This was one of my favorite games. Loved the music.

    Completely underrated.
