At the Bronx Zoo viewing my beloved lions. M'wasi, the father, is displaying his dominance over his young, but maturing son, Shani. This is a natural behavior for lions. In the wild, a father will oust his maturing male sons out of the pride and into the wide open spaces of Africa to forge a life for themselves away from their birth pride. This prevents inbreeding and also spreads his genes farther across the land. Here at the Zoo, M'wasi shows that this is still the way of things, even with captive lions. Unfortunately, young Shani has no where to run so I'm pretty sure he will be leaving our zoo pretty soon and his sisters, Nala and Adamma, as well. I'll miss them, but it's for their own good. Just to remind everyone, this is natural lion behavior. M'wasi isn't being mean or even a bully. He's just behaving as God has intended him to.
