Have you even listed to this performance? Tommy has shit tone, is playing shit and is out of key in most places. His solo stuff is listenable, but it doesn't compare with what Blackmore has done.
Highway Star, Burn, Smoke on the Water, Kill the King, Knocking at your Back Door, Lazy, Demon's Eye, Man on the Silver Mountain, Stargazer, The Battle Rages On, Child in Time.. how many of these is Tommy "too-fucked-to-play-but-could-if-he-wanted-to-really" Bolin remembered for? None.
Don't believe Deep Purple band would have survived if Gillan had not returned. Had his Ritchie conflicts, but Ritchie moody and worse but absolutely BRILLIANT guitarist, love him. (Gillan probably not always that easy to get along with either lol.) DP just blended together and creativity in high gear when everyone got along and happy. As Gillan said in his autobiography, "The glint in the eye is back." Too bad this had to be said in the '90s after Ritchie had quit and been replaced
These guys just can't SING! Off-key - kind of parallet CMA Entertainer of the Year (2011) Taylor Swift, who can't carry a tune but has STAR - and money appeal to the industry. She's very wholesome, but it's painful to listen to her (my opinion!)
But I believe these guys sing even WORSE than Taylor!!
@xxzeon Thanks but i am none of the above - I'm over 45 years old, I've played guitar in a gigging band and dont' give a flying V what you or others say. I'm not denying Tommy's potential, the fact is that here he played utter shite. Officially he slept on his arm, unofficially he was off his face. Do you seriously believe Tommy played well here?? That said, Hughes screaming everywhere, Coverdale up himself, Bolin probably performed better than most!
@xxzeon Blackmore had a unique sound and style that was perfect for DP, Bolin was a good guitar player in the studio and before he joined Purple, but his live performances with Purple were embarrassingly bad, most of the time he could hardly play at all. I know he was offf his tits on drugs most of the time but it doesn't alter the fact that he sounded dreadful live - I know because I saw him on the 1975 tour.
@Vodkaboy02 Blackmore is perhaps the most OVER RATED guitar player is early 70's metal. He could not hold a candle to tommy bolin...it is obvious you are either very young, an accomplished "air guitar" player or one of those guys who go along with what another moron says. Bolin's technical skills along with his breadth and knowledge of the instrument through the music that he played was superior to Blackmore in every aspect.. I suggest you check the LP's Bolin did with Billy Cobham or Zeypher!
@strings191 - This is bad can u get more of this concert? haha. That reminds me of a Woody Allen joke where an elderly couple is at a restaurant: The elderly man says "this food is horrible", and his wife then says, "I know..and in such small portions too!"
