Cutting groves in your sword makes you loose credibility with the audience if they handle it, can upset your balance, can cause your sword to rust and generally just ruin it. Its dumb. So are all of the other tricks that modify the sword. Its made and balanced a specific way for a specific reason. Leave the modifications to hte sword crafters.

For that matter, you should never begin practicing in front of a mirror, because you'll learn to rely on seeing it on your head instead of feeling it.
