An amazing event occurs nightly during the month of September. Portland, Oregon hosts a nature show that completely bowled me over. Vaux's Swifts gather above the Chapman School chimney just before sunset each evening. The number of birds vary, but the night my wife and I visited, there were approximately 15,000 birds. Watching clouds of birds billowing overhead could give a person a crick in their neck. But it was worth it. The finale brought rounds of applause. The swifts split off into smaller groups after sunset, and then one group at a time dove into the chimney for a good night's rest.
